OUR 2008 SEASON:
To be arranged but we intend to go to:
Rochester Sweep's Festival.
4th Suffolk Folk Festival at Woodbridge.
Leigh Folk Festival.
July 4th - 6th: HARWICH MORRIS MEN'S SUMMER CELEBRATION!
Broadstairs Folk Week.

The History of Harwich Morris Men
Harwich Morris Men could very easily have been, literally, a five minute wonder. In 1978 the teachers at Harwich School were planning a summer celebration. Two teachers, Matt Annear and Neil Arbon, both had an interest in folk music. The word on the grapevine was that Roger Hamer, who was soon to join the staff, had danced with Redbornstoke Morris Men. Wouldn't it be fun to entertain the expected masses with a Morris Dance? When Roger arrived he agreed to teach them a couple of dances. A motley crew learned to dance "Dearest Dicky" and "Beaux of London City".

That early lineup was: Matt Annear, Neil Arbon, Bernard Fawcett, John Finch, Roger Hamer and Dave Sampson. The music was provided by John Hoskyns on the violin.

They put together the costumes from whatever came to hand. Cricket provided the white shirts and trousers. Netball provided the crossed team ribbons that became the baldricks and the school badge was proudly placed in the middle to hold it together. Bells were attached to elastic and these makeshift pads finished off the regalia.

To everyones surprise the performance received rapturous applause and the dancers enjoyed it so much that they decided to take it more seriously. At least, as serious as any morris side take themselves.

Neil became the first Squire and the side with no name became Harwich Morris and danced it first season in 1979.

THE 2007 SEASON
The 2007 season was enjoyed by all. We danced at Rochester Sweeps Fair, Leigh-on-Sea Folk Festival, the Suffolk Folk Festival at Woodbridge and Broadstairs Folk Week. We also staged our 2007 SUMMER CELEBRATION in July which was a great success. To find out about our SUMMER CELEBRATION 2008 click
